Boas Leituras!
Goodreads Review
After a long string of great literary fiction books, I was ready for something different. But that was not the main reason that led me to pick this book. Fourth Wing has been a huge tik tok success, and even though I don’t really have tik tok, I started seeing a lot of YouTube videos with mainly bad reviews about this book. But then I came across a hilarious one, where the guy was not being able to cope with all the spiciness in this story and went on and on about horny dragons. Needless to say, that this was just the thing that made decide this was going to be my next read.
I start by calming all your anxious hearts and letting you all know that the video I saw was a huge overreaction. There is a grand total of 2 spicy(ish) scenes, that can be easily handled by any grown person. Nonetheless, if spice really is not your thing, then you have been warned, there are 2 scenes and some tension, you can choose to ignore this book.
Now that we’ve dealt with this, I must say this book was a surprise. I’m not a huge fan of internet sensations, so my expectations were really low. Maybe that’s why I ended up really liking this book. If nothing else, it made me realise I much prefer epic fantasy (with a dab of romance), than the cozy fantasy books I’ve been reading lately. The story grabbed me, and it was difficult to put the book down and get on with my day-to-day chores (like going to the beach or feeding my son). I ended up losing more hours of sleep than I care to admit.
But what is this book about? Nothing extremely original, to be fair. It’s High Fantasy, with dragons and magical academies, and all the other clichés of the genre. But it was well thought and well put together, and really well edited. There were no scenes that should not be there, or words that were too much. It was packed full of action, and I was glued to the pages. It is basically the story of Violet Sorrengail (even the name is a bit cliché, isn’t it?), that was forced to join the dragon rider’s academy by her mother, to follow family tradition. Her mother is a high patent official in the army, and has a handful of enemies, a lot of them are in Violet’s academy and cannot wait to seize the opportunity to have some revenge. But, as expected, Violet will surprise everybody.
As I said before, the highest point in this book is how it was executed. Clean and effective, leaving us wanting for more. Luckily, part 2 is coming out in November, so I won’t need to wait much. I had promised myself I would not start another unfinished series, after the Game of Thrones fiasco, but I broke my promise several times.
Another success in this entertaining summer. On to the next.
Happy Reading!
